After high school, Bill enrolled in Harvard University in 1973 as a freshman studying computer science. This is where his ideas became physical. Bill started by developing a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer ( The MITS Altar). From there he founded his own company Micro-soft. Bill, along with his childhood friend Paul Allen, soon grew the company which turned into Microsoft in 1973.

The same year (which would have been his third year at Harvard), Gates left school and continued on with his growing success in Microsoft, developing software for personal computers.   In 1992 he was honored with the National Medal of Technology for Technological Achievement, which was presented by George Bush. Up until then Bill was focused on his company, but in 1994 Bill decided to settle down and marry Melinda French, a well known American philanthropist.

The following year Bill was declared the richest man in the world by Forbes Magazine. It was also in this year that Bill wrote and published his first book “The Road Ahead”. And then in 1999, Bill wrote another book: “Business @the speed of thought.” This book was another hit that was published not only in the United States but in 60 different countries and also in 25 different languages. In addition, it was listed as a bestseller in New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon.com. In the year 2000 Bill and his wife started the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

From 2000 to 2006, Bill served as the Chief Software Architect and Chairmen of Microsoft but In 2006 Bill made the big announcement: at the age of 51 he would no longer be handling the day to day operations of Microsoft, though he would remain the chairman of the company. In 2008 Bill decided to start distributing his funds around by using his proceeds of both his books to non-profit organizations that support the use of technological education and skill development.

Bill started as just an average guy who ended up striking it big by using his knowledge and computer skills. For anyone else it may have not been as easy - but because of Bill's extensive time and effort Bill has come to the point to where he is today. From the everyday backyard student, Bill has become quite the global megaman.
